Nipple tissue?

Dear Alice,

I have a quick question for you. I have quite large nipples and when I feel them there is something under the skin. It's about the size of a nickel. I noticed this for the first time when I turned 13 and every year my nipples have gotten bigger. I was wondering if this is just a gland of some kind or what exactly it is and its purpose.

Thanks for your time.

From your description, it sounds like breast tissue, however, Alice does not diagnose. Breast tissue is normal. Men as well as women have breast tissue, just less of it. However, Alice suggests that you make an appointment with Health Services just to be sure. Call 4- 2284, then press 2.

A health provider will probably ask how long you have had this, if there is any pain, whether or not you have noticed any changes, etc. It is important to learn what your baseline of a healthy body is, so that you can identify any changes that may need to be looked at. Getting it checked out can take time and sometimes money, but can also bring you peace of mind.
